Life as a digital nomad family is amazing – but it’s not the life you see online. Influencers, like me, are guilty of portraying our lives as an endless highlight reel: mornings at the beach, afternoons lounging by the pool, and rare workdays filled with ocean breezes and tropical drinks.

While these moments of pure bliss abolutely exist, the truth is, our lives are far more boring and grounded than the Reels I share on social media.

Digital Nomad Family Life is still, well, life.

We still make meals, miss deadlines, manage toddler meltdowns, and are constnatly stuck in an endless pile of laundry – all while exploring new cultures and countries.

If you’re thinking of diving into the full-time family travel lifestyle, don’t let misconceptions cloud your expectations. It’s a great way to live, but if you think any of these five Misconceptions will become your family’s new lifestyle, you’re in for a shock.

Here are the five biggest myths about the digital nomad lifestyle, and what it’s really like.

Misconception #1: You’re on Vacation 24/7

This is, by far, the most common misconception.

If you’re traveling the world as a digital nomad family, you’re not on vacation. You’re living.

No, you don’t have a morning commute.
No, your kids don’t have to be in school by 7:30.

But your boss still expects you to meet deadlines. You’re still answering e-mails. Life doesn’t care about the quality of the waves in Peru, the brilliance of the day in the Cook Islands, or the air quality in Chiang Mai.

Life, no matter where it is, comes with structure. Remote work requires focus, commitment, and honest communication. Digital nomad family life is incredible, but it costs money. And money has to be earned.

If you want to take your family’s digital nomad journey seriously, you need a remote job that supports it.

Here are our favorite websites to find remote work.

Misconception #2: You’ll Work from the Beach, Pool, or a Trendy Café Every Day

For our first week as digital nomads, we booked a beautiful resort in Phuket with a huge pool. We imagined our new lives as digital nomads, lounging by the pool, writing blog posts with a tropical beverage in hand, and taking a quick dip in the pool in between meetings. It was the perfect remote-work fantasy.

It took precisely one meeting for us to realize this dream was just that, a dream.

Here’s why working in public spaces doesn’t always work:

Data Security Matters

Many employers require employees to work in private, secure environments. That means no co-working cafes, no poolside lounges, and definitely no beach bars. If you’re working remotely, talk to your employer about their data protection requirements.

Dennis, as an IT consultant, has to work on a private Wi-Fi network. He can’t hop on the public Wi-Fi at our favorite beachside cafe to work (without using a VPN to keep his client’s data safe).

We use NordVPN to keep our data (and our employer’s data) private when working around the world.

Background Noise Isn’t as Charming as It Sounds

My first disastrous meeting as a digital nomad was held at a beach bar. I had to keep my microphone muted and my camera off. Afterwards, my boss set up a call to scold me. As relaxing as the sounds of the ocean can be, they bothered the rest of my team.

Now, we take meetings in our hotel rooms.

Your Laptop Is Your Lifeline

As digital nomads, we rely on our laptops. A simple spilled latte isn’t a minor inconvenience for digital nomads – it means we’ve lost our only source of income. The sand, salty air, and water found at the beach killed one laptop in our first year of travel, and the tropical heat killed a second.

Working with a view of the beach is just not worth the risk.

Respect Goes a Long Way

Your clients and coworkers are likely not working from paradise. Showing up to meetings in a bikini or from a beach sends the wrong message about your dedication. Your co-workers may begin to resent your freedom, leading to jealousy and interoffice political conflict.

Now, we protect our workdays and our clients feelings with structure. A dedicated workspace, stable Wi-Fi, and appropriate attire create trust.

Here are my favorite ways to maximize productivity as a digital nomad.

Misconception #3: You’ll Become a Better Parent, Partner, or Person as a Digital Nomad

I have some bad news – it won’t.

Moving abroad and becoming a nomadic family means giving up most of your possessions, yes, but you, your personality, and all your flaws come with you. Old habits, patterns, communication styles, and interpersonal issues of your family all come along for the ride.

Travel is a great way to expand your personality, discover new places patterns, and communication styles, but it doesn’t fundamentally change who you are without a lot of work from you.

Yes, full-time travel can help your family with:

  • More conscious, present, family time.
  • Spending more time together as a family
  • Less external societal pressure to behave a certain way
  • More flexibility in your schedule and less stress about time
  • Exposure to new cultures and ideas

Sadly, full-time travel will not magically fix or solve your family’s issues with:

  • Feeling overwhelmed by life, familial obligations, or other stressors.
  • Poor communication leading to miscommunications and arguements
  • Feeling burntout
  • Not being the person you want to be
  • Parenting challenges (toddler meltdowns happen globally)

Travel creates the conditions for growth, but you still have to do the work. Before leaving Hamburg, I wrote down my travel goals, what I wanted to get out of our journey, and the kind of person I wanted to become. Instead of waiting for our travel to begin, I began consciously changing my habits in our home country. This was so much easier, since I had previously established routines and could adjust certain habits in a familiar setting.

The Truth About Digital Nomad Family Life

Life as a digital nomad family is amazing. It’s the most liberating way to raise your children, but it’s also challenging.
