(What We Learned from Our Own Adventures — and Mistakes)

Traveling with a baby feels daunting. Between nap schedules, feeds, and diaper leaks, leaving the hotel room feels nearly impossible. But here’s the truth: Having a baby doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy travel anymore. It doesn’t mean you have to say no to adventure – it means adapting your expectations.

Before motherhood, I was a Pre-K teacher in Hamburg. I used to take 30 preschoolers on field trips, so I thought I knew what I was in for as a full-time traveling mom. After all, how hard could one baby be?

As it turns out, very.

But, we’re not the kind of family to give up something we love just because it’s hard. We’ve traveled full-time since our son was born, from Bangkok to Madeira, and learned (sometimes the hard way) how to choose baby-friendly travel activities that everyone can enjoy.

Here’s how we decide what’s worth doing — and what to skip.

Cheat Sheet for Choosing Baby-Friendly Activities

Here’s a quick cheat sheet you can use when planning your next adventure:

✅ Pick activities that allow breaks and flexibility
✅ Prioritize things you (the parent) enjoy
✅ Start with familiar experiences and work up to new experiences
✅ Prioritize safe and comfortable excursions, especially at the beginning.
✅ Remember: one bad day doesn’t define your trip

The Five Characteristics of a Baby-Friendly Activity

Over time, we’ve realized that not every “family-friendly” experience is truly baby-friendly. Some family-friendly excursions cater exclusively towards toddlers, small children, or babies, leaving the parents feeling overstimulated and bored. Others aren’t flexible enough to adapt to a baby’s ever-changing needs.

These are the five characteristics we now look for before booking anything.

1. Flexibility: Can You Adapt the Plan Around Your Baby?

Physically, babies are flexible, but when it comes to naptime and feeds, they’re entirely inflexible. That’s why you must choose a flexible activity.

Ask yourself:

  • Can you stop for a feeding or diaper change without ruining the experience?
  • Is there shade, shelter, or seating if your baby needs a break?
  • Could you leave early if things go south?

If the answer is “no” to those, it’s probably not a baby-friendly choice.

In Chiang Mai, we wanted to join an ethical elephant tour. But those tours involved long drives, jungle walks, and a full-day schedule — not exactly ideal for an unpredictable infant.

Instead, we discovered a better option: staying at an ethical elephant sanctuary with on-site bungalows. That way, we could see elephants at our own pace (and on our baby’s nap schedule).

Sometimes, making an activity flexible just means changing how you do it — not giving it up altogether.

2. Enjoyability: Is It Something You Actually Want to Do?

Traveling with a baby is challenging. As the parents, you’re going to have to pack the diaper bag, coordinate naps, keep everyone fed, and drive. Make sure the activity is something you genuinely enjoy.

If you’re not having fun, your baby won’t either.

Crowds make me tense, impatient, and short-tempered. That’s exactly how I felt during our first family outing — a trip to a massive Bangkok mall. My baby picked up on my stress and cried until we gave up and went home.

If an activity doesn’t fill your cup as a parent, it won’t be worth the stress.

3. Familiarity: Start with What Feels Comfortable

Traveling is all about experiencing something new, but when you’re traveling as a baby, everyday is a new experience. That’s why a little familiarity goes a long way.

If your family has never spent a whole day outside, don’t plan for a six-hour hike. Ease into the experience by finding familiarity in the unknown – spend an hour or two hiking before retreating to a shady cafe, a nearby park, or a quiet garden.

Sometimes, the most successful adventure days are the ones that feel the most like home.

4. Safety: Does It Feel Secure for Everyone?

Safety is relative. What my family feels safe doing may seem like a risk to yours, and vice versa.

Before having our son, I loved being on boats. My husband and I were working towards our sailing licenses and still dream of living on a ship, exploring the coastline. Now, as parents, we put those dreams on hold. At least, until our son was old enough to wear a life vest and could swim!

This doesn’t mean families can’t boat with babies.

Designed to Explore does it brilliantly!

But every parent’s comfort level is different, and it’s healthy to wait until an activity feels safe to you before signing your family up.

The same logic applies to hikes, wildlife encounters, tuk-tuk tours, or other forms of adventure. If your first reaction is to say, “Hell no”, listen to your gut. There will be other trips and other chances later in life.

⛵️ If life aboard a boat with your family in paradise sounds like your cup of tea, check out Designed to Explore. Their boat is kid-friendly (they live aboard with a toddler!) and the vacation is mom-approved. 5-Star meals, guided free-dives in paradise, and the prettiest water you’ve ever seen await you!

5. Comfort: Is It Realistically Doable with a Baby?

When traveling with a baby, especially on an excursion, comfort is essential. While you can survive just about anything for an hour, you don’t have to.

Ensuring you have access to shady spots, rest areas, and easy access to food, water, and diapers is key in enjoying your family’s travels.

In Thailand, for example, you can get to the gorgeous island of Koh Tao in one of two ways: a large, air-conditioned ferry with drinks and food, or a small, open-faced speedboat that jostles its passengers on the waves. Guess which one I call baby-friendly?

(hint: it’s the ferry).

❄️ Sometimes, the difference between a great day and your worst day ever is as simple as AC.

Real Lessons from Our Family Day Trips

My first family excursion (aka our trial by fire) occurred when our baby was six weeks old. We bravely (or stupidly) chose to explore Central World, a massive Bangkok mall. It was loud, crowded, and overstimulating. The baby cried. I cried. On the trip home, I think our cab driver cried.

A week later, we tried again — this time to Ancient City, an outdoor museum just outside Bangkok.

The day didn’t start smoothly. We got stuck in traffic on the way there, and when we arrived, we couldn’t rent a golf cart to explore the massive museum without a form of ID. My husband had “helpfully” taken all forms of ID out of my wallet to prevent me from accidentally losing them.

Not gonna lie, my marriage (and my husband’s life) almost ended there.

Eventually, I was able to convince the staff to rent us a golf cart for a hefty deposit and we ended up having a fantastic day. We moved at our own pace, took plenty of breaks, and found our rhythm as a family.

That very memorable day taught us everything we needed to know about exploring the world with a baby.

  • Keep a bag fully stocked with baby and mama essentials
  • DO NOT remove your ID from your wallet
  • Be flexible and adjust your plans as needed.
  • Your attitude directly affects your baby, so take care of yourself first.
  • Embrace the chaos. You’ll enjoy yourself more that way.

Travel Doesn’t End When You Have a Baby

Travel with a baby is messy. It’s unpredictable. It’s exhausting.

But, it’s incredibly rewarding.

Yes, your days of spontaneous all-day hikes and late-night dinners are over, for now. But, you’ll gain a whole new persspective on life. Seeing the world through my baby’s eyes and exploring everything our beautiful planet has to offer as a family is my favorite part of being a parent.

Parenthood doesn’t mean you have to stop exploring. You just have to do it differently.

The world is waiting, and so is your baby. Pack the diapers, adjust your expectations, and get exploring. It’s totally worth it.
