madeira with a baby/toddler, madeira with a baby

When my family first arrived in Madeira, we weren’t sure what to expect. While the photos of this Portuguese island looked like paradise, the dramatic cliffs and winding trails worried me. I couldn’t help but wonder: Is Madeira a family-friendly destination?

Could my family really explore a world-famous hiking destination filled with steep roads and volcanic landscapes – with a baby?

After spending two years exploring Madeira as a full-time traveling family, I can confidently say: Madeira is one of the most baby-friendly destinations I’ve ever visited. It’s clean, welcoming, and surprisingly easy to navigate – even with a toddler in tow.

Whether your family is planning their first international adventure with a baby or seasoned travelers, this guide covers everything families should know before visiting Madeira with a baby or toddler.

Why Madeira Is a Hidden Gem for Families

Madeira is often called the Hawaii of Europe, but this island destination has its own charm and exotic feel. Madeira’s warm, subtropical climate offers visitors year-round mild weather, eliminating the need to plan for extreme heat or cold.

Safety is one of Madeira’s biggest benefits. Crime is rare, the roads are well-maintained, and locals are extremely friendly towards children. Don’t be surprised if waiters or strangers in grocery stores stop to play peekaboo with your baby.

Another major family-friendly benefit to Madeira? The island is incredibly compact. Nothing on Madeira is further than a 90-minute drive away – and that’s if you take the backroads! Families can easily base themselves in one central village in Madeira and take easy day trips across the island.

For added peace of mind, the island boasts multiple modern hospitals, well-stocked pharmacies, and grocery stores, as well as world-class first responders.

💡 Did you know? Madeira has one of the lowest crime rates in all of Europe.

Getting Around Madeira with a Baby or Toddler

Madeira’s stunning views come with a steep price: the winding roads. Madeira’s mountains are steep, and the roads around the island are curvy! I recommend renting the smallest car possible, even when traveling with littles. Renting a car is the best way to explore the island, as it provides the flexibility to travel at your own pace and take breaks whenever needed.

We use DiscoverCars to rent our cars. They have the best rates on the island and no hidden fees.

If you’re a nervous driver, consider booking a central stay in Funchal and hiring a driver for excursions. The roads on Madeira are no joke! Public transport does exist, but outside of Funchal, but the service is limited and restricted to populated towns and villages – not the famous hiking trails.

As for strollers, Madeira isn’t very stroller-friendly. You can make it work, especially in Funchal, Ponta do Sol, and São Vicente, but you’ll need a carrier for hikes. Honestly, we aren’t a stroller family, so we invested in this Deuter carrier for Madeira’s hikes and use this Tula for trips into town.

Family-Friendly Nature & Hikes in Madeira

Filled with lush forests, waterfalls, and historic levadas, Madeira is a nature-lover’s paradise. If you’re worried about hiking with a baby, don’t be! Madeira offers numerous easy trails and scenic viewpoints that are suitable for families with young children.

My Favorite Baby-Friendly Hikes:

  • Levada dos Balcões: Short, shaded, and stroller-friendly up to the viewpoint. You’ll see sweeping views of the Ribeiro Frio valley.
  • P.R. 9.1 Caminho Para Todos: This easy trail in the Quieimadas national park is perfect for toddlers. It’s where my son learned to walk!
  • P.R. 6.1 Levada Do Paul II: This easy trail in Rabaçal is perfect for families who want a levada experience without the terrifying drop-offs.

Madeira’s main trails are well-maintained, but a big word of caution here: Storms cause trails to degrade quickly, and many of the trails in the inner island (connecting Sao Vicente to Boa Ventura, Pico Ruivo, or Seixal) are old and not well-maintained. These trails are best avoided by anyone other than local hikers and experienced, fit hikers who hire a local guide.

Check trail openings and closures on the official IFCN website and follow the rules!

Madeira’s weather changes quickly. Pack extra layers, including an insulating and water- and windproof layer, for all hikes, along with water and snacks.

I tried to time our drives and hikes with my son’s nap times. He slept peacefully in the carrier while I hiked amongst the ferns and enjoyed the mountain views.

🧺 Family Tip: Most trailheads have cafes, perfect for a coffee, tea, and cake break before hitting the trail.

Trails I recommend skipping with a baby or toddler:

Not all hikes on Madeira are suitable for babies or their parents. Some hikes are too steep, lack shade, or just aren’t stimulating enough for our littlest guests.

  • PR 8 – Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço: Dramatic coastal cliffs and beautiful views, unfortunately, mean a complete lack of shade. This trail is beautiful, but I recommend turning around after a few minutes. It get steep and hot soon!
  • PR 16 – Levada Fajã do Rodrigues: This trail is a fun hike, but eventually, you reach the 1 km long tunnel. Here, you’ll have to remove your baby carrier and crouch to make it to the end – or hike in the cold levada. It’s a trail that’s fun to start, and even more fun to end in the middle.
  • PR 9 – Levada do Caldeirão Verde: This trail is stunning, but it is skinny and well-visited. I don’t recommend hiking here with a baby, as some areas lack the space to put your carrier down.

Regardless of which trail you choose, follow basic hiking safety protocols.

Food, Dining & Family Essentials

Food in Madeira is fresh, flavorful, and toddler-approved. You’ll find plenty of grilled meats (espetade is a local specialty), soups (the iconic pumpkin soup is a must-try), and freshly baked bread (bolo de caco). Everything is served with a generous portion of freshly cut French fries.

Kids aren’t just tolerated in restaurants, they’re celebrated. Don’t worry about bringing your adorable ticking time bomb to dinner; locals love family meals. Most restaurants offer high chairs, and many have outdoor seating areas. For self-catering families, supermarkets are well stocked with baby purees, yoghurts, milk, and toddler snacks.

Some of my favorite restaurants are:

  • São Cristovão – amazing views, delicious food made with local ingredients, and friendly staff. The waiters are our neighbors, fruit vendors, and friends – so be polite!
  • Corvopan – a delicious bakery in Northern Madeira, perfect for stocking up on snacks before a hike!
  • Steak & Sun – slightly over budget, but this restaurant has some of the friendliest waitstaff on the island and delicious food.

Where to Stay in Madeira with Kids

Choosing the right base on Madeira is an important decision. Fortunately, Madeira’s compact size means you can be flexible on the location, allowing your family to choose the perfect place to stay for you.

  • Funchal: The capital city of the island, walkable and filled with all the modern amenities, Funchal has playgrounds, parks, shopping, and access to public transportation.
  • Calheta: Sunny and calm, Calheta is home to one of Madeira’s only sandy beaches. If you’re hoping to relax in the sand and unwind on vacation, Calheta is the place to stay!
  • São Vicente: The capital of the North, São Vicente is the perfect base to explore Madeira’s rugged northern side. There are multiple grocery stores, bakeries, and playgrounds for the whole family.

For families who prefer hotels but are concerned about the lack of laundry facilities, I have great news. Madeira has recently opened modern, high-speed laundry machines in all the Continentes on the island.

What to Pack When Visiting Madeira with a Baby

Packing for Madeira feels tricky. The combination of mountains, beaches, and fickle weather means you need to carefully consider what to bring – and what to leave at home.

Why Madeira Is Worth It for Families

Madeira continues to surprise us in every way. We arrived for the views, but we stayed for the vibes. Even now, after 2 years on the island, we discover new secret coves, walkable beach towns, and scenic family hikes every week.

If you’ve been dreaming of an international trip with your baby or toddler, Madeira is the perfect first trip. It’s safe, accessible, baby-friendly, and absolutely stunning.
