Famous for its jaw-dropping cliffs, misty forests, and dramatic coastline, Madeira is an absolute dream destination for hiking families. After living on the island for a year, my family and I have discovered which trails are toddler-friendly and which trails are best avoided. Between the steep drop-offs and narrow levadas, many hikes here are not designed for little explorers.
After months of exploring, scouting out, and slipping down trails, we’ve found Madeira’s safest, easiest, and most dreamy hikes for families. These trails are fun, offer stunning views, and are hikable for adventurers of all ages—from 1 to 99 years old.
Renting a car is the easiest way to explore Madeira at a toddler-friendly tempo. When renting, we use Discovercars.com. They have fewer hidden fees than the competition and offer competitive rates.
💡 This is a shortened version of my popular blog, 5 Family-Friendly Hikes in Madeira.
What Makes a Hike Family-Friendly in Madeira?
Before jumping into my favorite hikes, here’s a quick insight into my definition of “family-friendly”.
✅ Safe: Wide trails, fenced paths, minimal drop-offs.
🚗 Accessible: Close to parking lots
🥾 Flat(ish): Gentle inclines. There is no true flat in Madeira!
👶 Tested: Personally hiked by us — baby and all.
1. Balcões (P.R. 11 – Vereda dos Balcões)

Location: Ribeiro Frio
Distance: 3 km roundtrip
Difficulty: Easy
Trail: Flat with exposed roots.
Balcões is hands-down the easiest trail in Madeira. This well-known trail is perfect for little legs. The wide, shaded 1.5-kilometer-long path leads to a stunning viewpoint overlooking Madeira’s highest peaks: Pico do Areeiro, Pico Ruivo, and Pico das Torres.
💡 Toddler Mom Hack: Bring birdseed! The birds here are famously friendly and will eat straight from your hand.
After your hike, stop for lunch at Snack Bar Flor da Selva — their steak sandwich (“Prego Especial”) is my personal favorite.
⚠️ Tips:
- Arrive early — Balcões is popular and gets crowded by midday.
- The drive up is steep and winding — if you’re nervous about mountain roads, hire a local guide.
2. Achadas da Cruz

Location: Northwest Madeira
Access: Steep cable car (9:00–12:00, 13:00–17:15)
Cost: €6 roundtrip per adult
Trail: Flat, paved, and toddler-friendly
If you only have time for one hike on Madeira, make it Achadas da Cruz. Getting to Achadas da Cruz is an hour drive from Funchal, and involves a nerve-wracking ride on Europe’s steepest cable car (a 98% gradient!) – the only amusement park on Madeira.
At the bottom, you’ll find a peaceful, car-free coastal village nestled into stunning cliffs. A paved walking path is perfect for tiny toddler legs (and tired mama’s)!
💡 Toddler Mom Tip: Bring snacks. While there is a restaurant at the bottom of the cable car, it has sporadic hours. There are no shops for diapers, wipes, snacks, or anything else at the bottom of the cliff. We usually pack enough for 2–3 hours of exploring.
If you want to stay closer to the trailhead (and experience a bit of genuine Madeiran hospitality) I highly recommend booking a night or two at Recantos do Castanheiro. The owner, Celina, goes out of her way to make your stay comfy, cozy, and family-friendly.
3. Queimadas Natural Park

Location: Near Santana
Trail: Caminho Para Todos (2 km)
Difficulty: Easy
Trail: Partially flat, partially paved, toddler-friendly
Things to See: Ducks and trout in the levada
Tucked away in the hills above Santana, Queimadas is a lush forest reserve famous for its foggy fairytale house and gentle walking trails. Home to the famous Levada do Caldeirão Verde, families with toddlers should stick to the easier, gentler Caminho Para Todos.
The Caminho Para Todos (Path for All) lives up to its name — it’s flat, paved, and fenced on both sides, making it ideal for toddlers, strollers, and older family members.
⚠️ Toddler Mom Tips:
- Bring cash! Parking is paid, and the meter doesn’t take cards.
- The café is delicious but pricey. Stock up on snacks at Continente Santana to stay #onbudget.
4. Fanal Forest

Location: Madeira Highlands
Best Time: Cloudy or foggy days
Difficulty: Easy to Medium
Trail: Open grassy field with muddy spots, loose cows, and a steep climb.
Fanal Forest is a rare beauty. Home to Madeira’s cloud forest, foggy days make this stunning natural preserve more beautiful. The ancient laurel trees and free-roaming cows add to the ethereal feeling of the Maderian highlands.
There’s not a structured trail, this forest is a huge, open field. Perfect for kids to run wild in! Keep an eye out for cow patties and avoid climbing the ancient trees.
💡 Toddler Mom Tip: Pack extra layers. The foggy weather gets chilly and the weather changes fast in the Madeiran mountains. A sunhat, raincoat, and sweater will come in handy.
5. Lombo do Mouro

Location: Near Encumeada / Bica da Cana
Difficulty: Moderate (stroller-friendly but steep)
Trail: Closed mountain road
A hike that is not a hike, Lombo do Mouro is a scenic mountain walk on a closed road. The views here are next-level. Prepared to be enveloped by passing clouds as you stare at waterfalls and enjoy the views.
It’s excellent for stroller naps, and parents can walk side by side.
🍴 Toddler mom Tip: Use Lombo do Mouro as the perfect stop on your way to São Vicente. The drive up to the hike is stunning, and the views are incredible.
🎒 What to Pack for Family Hikes in Madeira
Madeiran weather is fickle and can change in minutes! Make sure you pack smart.
I recommend taking:
- Insulating Fleece Layer
- Windproof, waterproof layer
- Sun protection (sunhat, sunscreen, and sunglasses)
- Hiking Carrier
- Proper Hiking Footwear
- Swimsuits
Final Thoughts: Hiking Madeira With Kids
Madeira is steep and rugged, but hiking on this gorgeous island is incredibly rewarding for families who lvoe the outdoors. These five trails are completely doable with kids of all ages, from 1 – 99.
Grab your hiking boots (or trail runners), load up the carrier, and remember: adventure doesn’t stop when you have kids. It just looks a little different.
